James Bond: Ladbrokes suspend betting on Tom Hardy becoming new 007

The news comes days after Daniel Craig reportedly quit the role

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have suspended betting on Tom Hardy replacing Daniel Craig as the new James Bond.

The betting company revealed the news on its social media accounts yesterday (15 February). A spokesperson told The Independent: "Our spies are convinced Hardy will be the next 007.

"The run of bets has shaken the Bond betting and for the time being, we're taking a breather."

This announcement comes soon after the news that current Bond Daniel Craig was to star in a BBC adaptation of Jonathan Franzen novel Purity leading to swelled rumours the actor was 'quitting' the role.

The Independent learned soon after, however, that a decision on whether Craig will return as Bond has not yet been reached and that if he does appear in Purity, it does not necessarily mean he won't still be playing Bond.

Despite not being favourite, Mad Max: Fury Road actor Hardy - currently Oscar-nominated for his supporting role in The Revenant - has previously been mentioned as the British actor's potential replacement.

Other actors in line for the famous role includes Damian Lewis, Idris Elba and James Norton.

Craig has played Bond across four films over a nine year period, beginning with Casino Royale and culminating in last year's Spectre.
