UK weather forecast: Cool and fine Sunday for most with showers in southeast

Most of UK set for breezy but lengthy sunny spells

Much of the UK will enjoy lengthy, albeit cooler, sunny spells on Sunday, but a wet grey start will greet those in the southeast.

A gentle breeze will accompany the drizzle in the south, although the rain is expected to break up and clear away throughout the day.

Alex Burkill, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “We’ve got a front across the south at the moment, that’s why it is a cloudy, wet, slow start.

“It’s clearing away, but there is the potential it could turn a little heavier for a time across the far southeast, particularly Kent, before it clears this evening.”

The forecast in northwest Scotland and Northern Ireland paints a similar picture, where breezy conditions and sharp showers can be expected.

Mr Burkill said: “As much as some places will see some sunny spells, turning increasingly sunny for many, there are showers across parts of Scotland in particular and some of those will be on the heavy side.”

Elsewhere, there will be plenty of sunshine but temperatures will dip and be noticeably lower than Saturday, especially in the south.

The evening will bring clearer skies and with them a chillier night. Some showers will remain towards the north.

Mr Burkill said: “It won’t be as chilly as last (Saturday) night – it got to 1.4C at Katesbridge in Northern Ireland, which is pretty chilly for the time of year.

“The absolute lows [on Sunday night] will be a little bit higher than that, so low- to mid-single figures: 3C and 4C.

“However, the clearer skies in southern areas mean it will be colder and widely into single figures, apart from the London area where it will hold up into double figures.”

Cloud and showers will punctuate the rest of the week towards northern parts of the country. Meanwhile, it should stay fine in the south.

“For the start of the week, there is a north-south split,” Mr Burkill added.

“It will be cloudier with showers across northern parts, whereas fine and warm in the south.

“Towards the middle and the end of the week, we will see persistent rain in the north that will eventually spread further southwards.”
